St Johns Cathedral, Knoxville, TNSt. John's Cathedral Arts Series

Chase Hawkins, principal trumpet of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, joins Jason Overall, St. John’s Director of Music, in a program of music for trumpet and organ.

The featured work will be Okna (Windows) by the Czech composer Petr Eben. The inspiration for the work was Chagall’s stained-glass windows for the synagogue in Jerusalem, with the solemnity of the glass panels reminding one of the organ and the intense colors suggesting the sound of the trumpet. Eben maintains the instrument’s independence, allowing them to combine and separate in their own textural and rhythmic ways. The individual movements of the cycle are The Blue Window, The Green Window, The Red Window, and The Golden Window.

Also on the program:

Jason Overall: Fanfare
Ivan Jevtic: Que le jour est beau!
Louis Verne: From 24 Pieces en style libre (Pieces in freestyle), Opus 31
David Kelley: An American Triptych
Astor Piazzolla (arr. P. Chase Hawkins): Libertango
